Postgraduate Researchers in Science Medicine Conference 2005
Wednesday 6th July 2005, Greenbank Buildings, UCLan, Preston
The event attracted around 65 PGRs, academics and sector professionals from 8 of 13 of the region’s HEIs.

Prof Peter Aggett, Director of the Lancashire School of Health and Postgraduate Medicine at UCLan introduced the keynote presentation from Prof John Goodacre, Director of Clinical Research at UCLan.
Prof Goodacre used the statement “Why postgraduate programmes must be good for our health” to look at the value of postgraduate training to an individual, the wider community and the NHS.
The conference continued with a selection of talks given by postgraduate researchers from across the region.
The talks were streamed into 3 groups: science and technology, medical and clinical practice, and professional experience and the development of patient services. Talk lists and abstracts available to view online.
Conference attendees were asked to vote on who they felt provided the best presentation in each group and those with the highest vote were awarded £50 in book vouchers.

Developing alternative communication strategies to facilitate communication with Somali asthma patients with limited English
Over lunch posters were viewed, with the PRISM poster prize being awarded to James Prior, with a poster entitled Method Development for Acoustic Emission Analysis of Healthy Knee Joints.

After lunch there was a selection of workshops offered by academics and professionals from UCLan, The University of Liverpool, TrusTECH and Elsevier Publishing. The workshops are available to download below in Adobe PDF format.

The conference concluded with a drinks reception and awarding of the oral and poster presentation prizes.
