This study will investigate the potential to adapt acoustic emission (AE) technology to knee joint assessment. Research has established the presence of knee AE but this study will endeavour to progress this field and formulate new methodologies for AE acquisition from the knee through three studies: 1) Location of optimum anatomical sensor positions on the joint and establishing a reliable sensor attachment mechanism, 2) Ascertain optimum knee angular velocities and displacements for AE collection and 3) Comparing the AE of individuals with the newly defined procedures. The AE data are collected during passive knee joint movement using an Isokinetic dynamometer to allow repeatability of the action and production of angular data. Once a standardised protocol has been established this research could provide a basis for progression to the analysis of diseased joints.
