What kind of QA structure exists and what are the main quality issues for Patients in Yemen Hospitals: Survey data from four hospitals in Sana’a.

Al-Surimi K, Hassan A and Haran D

Objective: To understand quality problems from the client perspective

Methods: A conceptual framework has been developed for the introduction of QA to hospital services in Yemen. The key steps involve describing the stages required for implementation of QA, identifying the main quality issues and assessing the current status of QA development in Yemen. Quantitative and qualitative studies were conducted to identify the main quality issues from the clients’ perspective. Two interview questionnaires, one for outpatients and one for in-patents, were developed based on tried and tested tools employed elsewhere. The four main hospitals in Sana’a, the capital of Yemen were selected as the target for the survey.

Results: Availability of drugs was the most serious concern of out-patients with less than 20% of clients satisfied.

Cleanliness of toilets and bathrooms and waiting time in A&E were the greatest causes of dissatisfaction for in-patients. One other hand, Six indicators were used to examine the quality assurance structure. Only two thirds of senior staff approached knew of the QA committee at MoH level. Almost half of responders didn’t know of the QA committee at hospital level.

Conclusions: This study provides evidence on the quality concerns of in-patient and out-patients in Yemen hospitals and relates these to the existence and awareness of quality structures in the health services in Yemen. The framework that is developed in this study provides the mechanisms by which the major concerns of clients can better be addressed by the QA structure. The reforms in the ministry of health in Yemen are able to reorient the services to make quality improvements
