These were some of the comments from the participants of the NW Biosciences GRADschool.

The NW Biosciences GRADschool was the fourth in the NW sector-specific GRADschool series, and it attracted around 45 postgraduate researchers from across the North West and further.

A highly intensive programme was developed to provide the opportunity to test a number of skills This included setting up a biobusiness company; making multi-million pound decisions in a drug-discovery game; developing a strategy to engage local communities in bioscience research through Manchester Museum and tackling the complex and often emotive issue of genetically modified foods.

The course was directed by Prof Jackie Oldham, Operational Director of the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility.

Dr Mike Fisher (Deputy Director of BioNoW, North West Development Agency) gave an insightful presentation detailing the opportunities available to postgraduate researchers in the NW.

Dr Henry McGhie (Principle Curator of Natural History, Manchester Museum) provided the opportunity for the participants to consider aspects of their research in relation to engaging the public visiting Manchester Museum.

Around 20 regional employers

This event attracted interest from a range of regional employers interested in developing greater links with bioscience PhDs.

On the evening of the second day regional employers were invited to a ‘speed networking’ session. This innovative idea was a great way for all participants and invited guest to exchange information.
